The Staraya Ladoga Fortress is regarded as one of Russia's most historical sites, often referred to as the "first capital of the Rus." Situated on the Volkhov River near Lake Ladoga, the settlement was established as early as 753 and served as a critical junction on the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. According to the Primary Chronicle, the legendary Rurik established his first seat of power here in 862. The current stone fortress dates back to 1114 and was repeatedly reinforced over the centuries to withstand northern invasions. Within its walls stands the 12th-century St. George's Church, world-renowned for its rare pre-Mongol frescoes. Today, Staraya Ladoga is a major open-air museum, providing visitors with a compelling look at the origins of Russian statehood and early medieval architecture.

Visiting
Staraya Ladoga Fortress is a partially reconstructed stone-and-wood fort on the Volkhov River; the grounds and museum exhibitions are accessible. The interiors of the towers can be visited, but some areas are closed for safety.
Typical hours
The fortress is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm during the summer season. In winter months, hours are reduced and some outdoor areas may close due to snow.
Photography
Photography outdoors is allowed without restrictions. In the museum rooms, flash is generally prohibited to protect the exhibits.
Time needed
A visit to the fortress and museum takes about one and a half to two hours. Those wishing to explore the surrounding historical sites should allocate half a day.

Combine the fortress with the nearby St. George Monastery and the Saviour Church in Staraya Ladoga. The village of Staraya Ladoga itself provides old wooden houses and an archaeological museum.
Getting there
Staraya Ladoga is about 120 km east of Saint Petersburg, reachable by car or bus. From the bus station in Volkhov, local buses run to the village and fortress.
Insider tip
Visit the fortress early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility along the Volkhov banks. Bring cash as there are few ATMs in the area.
