Solovetsky Monastery (Russia)

Weather…

The fortified Solovetsky Monastery is situated in isolation on the harsh islands of the White Sea, embodying a unique blend of deep Russian Orthodox spirituality and dark political history. Founded in the 15th century, the institution evolved into one of the wealthiest and most powerful religious centers in Northern Russia, protected by massive walls constructed from huge boulders. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it served as an impregnable fortress that repelled Scandinavian attacks on the Russian Empire. The site's history took a drastic turn in 1923 when the Soviet government converted the sanctuary into the first forced labor camp of the Gulag system, the 'Solovki camp', where tens of thousands of political prisoners endured inhumane conditions. Today, the monastery has been returned to the church; the monks have restored spiritual life while simultaneously establishing memorials to honor the victims of political repression.
