Novosibirsk Zoo (Russia)

Weather…

Located deep in the heart of Siberia, the Novosibirsk Zoo is one of the most highly respected zoological institutions in the world and a proud landmark of the city. Since its establishment in 1947, the zoo has expanded across a sprawling 60-hectare natural pine forest campus, beautifully integrating the natural environment into the animal enclosures. Housing more than 11,000 individual animals representing over 700 distinct species, it operates as the largest zoo beyond the Ural Mountains. Novosibirsk has achieved worldwide acclaim for its unparalleled and consistent success in breeding rare and critically endangered wild cats, particularly the snow leopard and the Amur leopard. An absolute rarity and massive public draw is the captive breeding of ligers, an incredibly rare hybrid cross between a lion and a tiger, along with their subsequent offspring, known as liligers. Despite facing extreme climatic conditions with freezing Siberian winters, the zoo provides state-of-the-art heated pavilions and actively leads extensive international conservation and research programs for polar and taiga wildlife.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Novosibirsk Zoo is open year-round, but summer (June-August) is handy for seeing snow leopards and ligers in outdoor enclosures. In winter (December-February) many cat species are especially active due to cooler temperatures.
🌅
Best time of day
Feeding times are not public, but early morning is generally a good time to see the big cats active. Late afternoon animals often become lively again, especially during cooler hours.
📜
Etiquette
Feeding animals is prohibited - do not throw food into enclosures. Always keep distance from barriers and avoid loud noises to prevent stressing the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars help observe fur details and animal behavior from a distance. In winter, warm clothing and gloves are essential as outdoor areas are unheated.
🧭
Getting there
The zoo is located in central Novosibirsk and easily reached by bus or metro (Marshal Pokryshkin station). Many city bus lines stop directly at the zoo grounds.
🦌
What to expect
The zoo is large - plan at least three to four hours for a visit to see all areas. The big cats are often most active in the morning after feeding; be patient and wait away from crowds.
