Lake Zaysan (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

Lake Zaysan in eastern Kazakhstan is a vast freshwater lake known for its potentially ancient age. Some geologists speculate that the lake basin dates back to the Cretaceous period and could be over 65 million years old, which would make it the oldest lake in the world. The lake is mainly fed by the Black Irtysh, which comes from China, and the White Irtysh flows out of it. Originally, the lake was about 1,800 square kilometers in size. However, with the construction of the Bukhtarma dam on the Irtysh in the 1950s, the water level rose by 6 meters, causing the lake to merge with the reservoir and increasing its area to over 5,000 square kilometers. Lake Zaysan is an extremely productive body of water and is known for its abundance of fish, making it an important fishing area. It is usually frozen from early November to the end of April. The region around the lake is an arid steppe landscape, which nevertheless provides important habitats for birds and other wildlife.

Getting there
Reaching this remote eastern lake typically requires a sturdy private vehicle navigating unpaved regional routes extending from larger urban centers. Travelers often use nearby towns as a base for exploring the vast surrounding landscape.
📅
Best season
The summer months offer the most hospitable climate for exploring the lake's expansive shores and observing the diverse regional wildlife. Winter conditions in this part of the country can be extremely harsh, with freezing temperatures and strong winds.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The immediate surroundings feature a mix of rugged shorelines, arid steppes, and flat wetlands, requiring some navigational care on foot. The ground can be uneven and occasionally muddy near the water margins and delta regions.
🎒
What to bring
Comprehensive outdoor preparation is essential, including windproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and abundant supplies of drinking water and snacks. Binoculars are highly recommended for observing the varied birdlife across the ancient waters.

Parking
Formal parking infrastructure is virtually non-existent; visitors typically park their vehicles on safe, flat stretches of open ground near their chosen access point. It is crucial to ensure the ground is solid enough to prevent getting bogged down.
⚠️
Safety
Isolation is the primary safety factor; always ensure your vehicle is in excellent condition and that someone knows your planned itinerary. Beware of sudden changes in weather, particularly the strong winds that can quickly whip up over the large lake.

Time needed
Due to the significant travel time required to reach the area, a visit is rarely shorter than a full day, and many choose to camp overnight. Thoroughly exploring the vast shorelines and surrounding steppes naturally demands an extended time commitment.
