Ridder is a historic mining city in eastern Kazakhstan, positioned deep within the valleys of the Altai Mountains. Founded in 1786 after officer Philip Ridder discovered rich mineral deposits, the city was known as Leninogorsk between 1941 and 2002. Geographically, Ridder is surrounded by wide-open alpine peaks and dense coniferous forests, creating a unique ecological setting. The economy has been centered on non-ferrous metallurgy for over two centuries, specifically the extraction of zinc, lead, and precious metals processed at the Kazzinc industrial complex. The climate is sharply continental, featuring long, exceptionally snowy winters, which has established Ridder as a major center for winter sports in Kazakhstan. The city's architecture reflects both its Russian imperial roots and its Soviet industrial heritage. Today, beyond its industrial significance, Ridder serves as the primary gateway for expeditions into the West Altai Nature Reserve.
