Oskemen, known in Russian as Ust-Kamenogorsk, is situated in eastern Kazakhstan at the confluence of the Irtysh and Ulba rivers, located in the foothills of the Altai Mountains. The city was founded in 1720 as a fortress to secure access to the mineral-rich regions of the Altai and to consolidate the Russian presence in the area. During the 20th century, Oskemen emerged as one of the world's most significant centers for non-ferrous metallurgy, with factories producing lead, zinc, titanium, and magnesium forming the economic backbone of the city. The city also plays a critical role in the nation's nuclear industry, housing the Ulba Metallurgical Plant, which processes nuclear fuel components. Oskemen's surroundings offer sweeping landscapes with dense forests and pristine alpine lakes, providing a stark contrast to the city's industrial profile. Despite environmental challenges stemming from heavy industry, Oskemen remains a vital educational hub and a key gateway for tourism in the Kazakh Altai.
