Kandalaksha is located at the innermost end of the Kandalaksha Gulf on the White Sea and gives a fascinating blend of maritime flair and Arctic tundra. The city is the convenient starting point to explore the Kandalaksha Nature Reserve, known for its numerous islands and nesting eider ducks. A mysterious highlight nearby is the 'Babylon Labyrinth', an ancient stone structure directly on the coast, whose origin remains a mystery to this day. The landscape is characterized by the surrounding tundra hills (fjells), which invite hiking in summer and skiing in winter. From the peaks, you have a wide view of the sea and the small skerry islands. In the waters of the White Sea, beluga whales and seals can often be spotted. The local culture is deeply rooted in seafaring and the traditions of the Pomors. Kandalaksha is well connected to the rail network and lies on the route to Murmansk. The best time for nature observations is June during the midnight sun. In winter, the Northern Lights and snow-covered forests are a draw. The regional cuisine has excellent fish dishes, especially salmon and cod directly from the Arctic Ocean.
