Curonian Spit National Park (Russia)

Weather…

The Curonian Spit National Park protects the Russian section of a 98-kilometer-long, incredibly narrow sand peninsula that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the open Baltic Sea. This highly fragile landscape, narrowing to just 400 meters across in certain sections, is globally renowned for its massive, migrating sand dunes, which rank among the highest in Europe. A particularly mystical highlight of the park is the 'Dancing Forest', where the trunks of pine trees have grown into bizarre, unexplained spirals and loops. Ecologically, the spit serves as one of Europe's most critical aerial corridors for bird migration. During the spring and autumn months, millions of migratory birds use this narrow strip of land as a vital navigational landmark and resting ground. The constant existential threat of wind and wave erosion requires ongoing human intervention, such as the strategic planting of dune grasses. Its unique geological formation earned it a designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the main migration periods for millions of birds using the spit as a stopover. In summer many species breed in the national park, including cormorants and gulls, but bird numbers are lower.
🌅
Best time of day
Dawn and dusk provide the best light and the most bird activity, especially during migratory seasons. At midday birds are often less active and seek shade in the forest, making observation harder.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked paths and observation platforms to avoid damaging the fragile dunes and forests. Feeding birds is prohibited, as is leaving trails in the dune areas to prevent erosion.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good light-gathering ability are very useful for birdwatching at dusk. Comfortable closed hiking shoes are recommended on sandy trails, and a windbreaker protects from the often brisk Baltic breeze.
🧭
Getting there
The national park is easily accessible by car or bus from the cities of Klaipėda (Lithuania) or Zelenogradsk (Russia). The main attractions are along the well-constructed road that crosses the entire spit.
🦌
What to expect
During peak migration, bird traffic is so dense you'll see birds almost constantly - patience is less needed then. In quieter months, however, you'll need to wait longer at a good spot to discover rare species.
