Izborsk Fortress (Russia)

Weather…

The Izborsk Fortress is one of the oldest and most significant defensive structures in Russia, located in the Pskov Oblast near the Estonian border. First mentioned in the Primary Chronicle in 862, it is regarded as one of the founding sites of the early Russian state. The current stone walls and towers on Zheravya Hill date primarily from 1330, when Prince Alexander of Pskov reinforced the position to counter the Livonian Order's incursions. The massive masonry, constructed from local limestone, features seven imposing towers, including the prominent Lukovka tower, which now serves as an observation point. Inside the fortress walls stands the 14th-century St. Nicholas Cathedral, a prime example of the Pskov architectural style. As a strategic bulwark on the western frontier, Izborsk withstood numerous sieges by crusaders and Polish-Lithuanian forces over several centuries. Today, the complex is part of a state museum-reserve, attracting visitors with its blend of medieval military architecture and the natural beauty of the surrounding springs and hills.
