Mustoja Landscape Reserve

The Mustoja Landscape Reserve is situated in southeastern Estonia within the Setomaa region and is renowned for its unique inland dune systems and expansive heathlands. Established in 1998, the reserve covers approximately 34 square kilometers of sandy terrain characterized by sparse pine forests and open landscapes. Historically, the area was used for several decades as a military training ground, a factor that ironically shielded the environment from intensive agriculture and development, preserving its wild state. Today, Mustoja is a haven for rare insect species and ground-nesting birds like the European Nightjar, which thrive in its open, heath-dominated habitats. The striking sand dunes are remnants of post-glacial aeolian processes, giving parts of the reserve a desert-like appearance that contrasts with the typical Estonian forest. Hikers are drawn to the profound stillness and sweeping views over the undulating landscape, which is particularly colorful during the heather bloom in late summer. The reserve also plays a role in sustaining the local Seto cultural identity, as traditional routes pass through the area.
