Vastseliina Castle Ruins (Estonia)

Weather…

The ruins of the Vastseliina Episcopal Castle, historically known as Neuhausen, are located in southeastern Estonia near the Russian border and serve as a testament to the military might of the Livonian Order. The fortress was founded in 1342 by Landmeister Burchard von Dreileben as a vital defensive outpost against the forces of Pskov and Novgorod. During the Middle Ages, the castle achieved pan-European fame as a significant pilgrimage site following a reported miracle involving a holy cross in the castle chapel in 1353. The fortification was largely destroyed by Russian troops in 1702 during the Great Northern War, after which it gradually fell into its current scenic state of decay. Today, substantial portions of the massive curtain walls and several towers remain standing, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval defensive engineering and fortification techniques. The site is now a popular destination for cultural events and historical reenactments, supported by a modern visitor center that details the castle's religious and military significance.
