Tornimägi (Tower Hill) is, at 68 meters above sea level, the highest elevation on the island of Hiiumaa and a prominent geographical feature in western Estonia. Located on the Kõpu Peninsula, it is part of a glacial terminal moraine that dominates the relief of the otherwise rather flat island. The strategic position of the hill was recognized centuries ago; the famous Kõpu Lighthouse stands here, one of the oldest continuously operating navigation lights in the world, whose construction began in 1504. The hill is surrounded by dense forests belonging to the Kõpu Nature Reserve, home to rare flora including various orchid species. For geologists, Tornimägi is of particular interest as it bears witness to post-glacial land uplift that continues to change the appearance of Estonia today. Hikers appreciate the climb to the summit, which features not only a historical journey through time but also a wide view over the Baltic Sea and the coastal landscape of Hiiumaa.

Getting there
This gently rising hill in southeastern Estonia, specifically in Võru County, is best reached by following the small rural roads that wind picturesquely through the surrounding agricultural landscapes.
Best season
The summer and early autumn months offer by far the best conditions, as the richly colored agricultural surroundings then provide a particularly beautiful contrast to the gently rolling hill landscape.

The slopes generally rise very gently above the surrounding farmland, allowing for a straightforward, technically undemanding ascent that typically follows unpaved grassy paths or agricultural dirt tracks.
What to bring
Simple, closed-toe footwear is entirely sufficient for this relaxing hike. Because the surrounding agricultural landscape is often quite open and breezy, bringing a light windbreaker can be very useful.

Parking is generally quite informal; visitors can usually just leave their vehicles along the edges of the rural access roads, taking care not to disrupt or block any local agricultural traffic in the area.
Safety
Because this hill directly borders actively cultivated agricultural lands, it is very important to stay on the visible paths to avoid accidentally trespassing on fields or damaging the local farm crops.

The very relaxed ascent up this gentle rise and taking the time to fully enjoy the unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape generally takes less than a single hour of walking at a very leisurely pace.
