Ishim is a historical city in Tyumen Oblast, situated within the West Siberian Plain on the left bank of the Ishim River. Founded in 1670 as Korkina Sloboda, it flourished due to its strategic location on trade routes connecting European Russia with Central Asia and China. By the 19th century, Ishim gained fame for hosting the Nikolskaya Fair, which was among the largest and most significant commercial events in Siberia. The city's architectural landscape preserves many fine examples of Siberian wooden and brick craftsmanship, offering a glimpse into its merchant past. Geographically, Ishim is surrounded by vast steppes and fertile river valleys that support the region's robust agricultural and food processing industries. Today, the city serves as an important junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway and a regional hub for education and culture in southern Tyumen Oblast. It is also celebrated as the birthplace of Pyotr Yershov, the renowned author of the Russian fairy tale 'The Little Humpbacked Horse'.
