Chuhuiv is a historic city in the Kharkiv Oblast, situated on the right bank of the Donets River. Founded in 1638 by Cossacks, it quickly developed into a vital military settlement within the Russian Empire. Chuhuiv is globally renowned as the birthplace of the eminent realist painter Ilya Repin, born here in 1844; his family home is now preserved as a memorial museum. During the 19th century, the city served as a center for military administration and was home to a prestigious officers' school.
