Novorossiysk is a prominent port city on the Black Sea coast in Krasnodar Krai, serving as Russia's largest commercial sea port. Established in 1838 at the site of a former Turkish fortress, it has grown into a vital industrial hub specializing in oil exports and cement production. During World War II, the city was a theater of intense combat, eventually earning the title of Hero City in 1973 for its defenders' bravery at the Malaya Zemlya bridgehead. The city is situated along the Tsemes Bay and is framed by the western spurs of the Caucasus Mountains, which contribute to the local climate's characteristic bora winds. Culturally, Novorossiysk is defined by its maritime heritage and military history, featuring extensive waterfront promenades and numerous memorials dedicated to its past.
