Ypané, a city in the Central Department, lies about 23 kilometres south of Asunción on the river of the same name, the Ypané, and belongs to the capital's metropolitan area. The name comes from Guaraní and means roughly branched river. The settlement first emerged at the end of the seventeenth century as a reduction and was first mentioned in 1538; it was officially recognised as an independent municipality in 1965. Today around 90 000 people live here, many of them daily commuters to Asunción. Characteristic of Ypané are its fertile clay soils, traditionally used to produce bricks and pottery, and the long sandy beaches along the Paraguay River, which are popular summer day-trip destinations for residents of the capital. Economically the town relies on small-scale industry, brick production, commuting and modest tourism. Landmarks include the old parish church of San Marcos and the annual carnival.
