Rock Islands (Palau)

Weather…

The Rock Islands of Palau, also known as Chelbacheb, are a striking collection of over 200 limestone islands scattered across a turquoise lagoon. These formations originated as ancient coral reefs that were uplifted from the ocean floor millions of years ago. Over time, wind, waves, and marine organisms eroded the bases of the islands, giving them their iconic mushroom-like appearance. Encompassing an area of 445 square kilometers, the islands were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2012 for their outstanding natural beauty and cultural significance. A unique feature of the archipelago is its 13 isolated marine lakes, which are home to specialized species that have evolved in isolation from the surrounding ocean. The lively coral reefs surrounding the islands are among the most biodiverse on the planet, attracting divers and snorkelers from around the world. Historically, the islands also contain ruins of stone villages and ancient rock art, providing insight into the early Austronesian migrations and the rich heritage of the Palauan people.
