Ngerulmud became the capital of Palau in 2006, succeeding Koror as the nation's administrative heart. Located in the state of Melekeok on Babeldaob Island, it is famously known as the least populous national capital in the world. The centerpiece of the administrative district is the Capitol complex, an architectural marvel modeled after the United States Capitol but uniquely embellished with Palauan motifs and cultural symbols. This site centralizes the country's ministries, the national congress (Olbiil Era Kelulau), and the supreme court, making it the focal point for all national policy and financial decisions. The relocation of the capital was a strategic move to encourage development on the mainland and relieve the urban pressure on Koror. Despite its official importance, Ngerulmud retains a serene and park-like atmosphere, with grand government buildings standing in stark contrast to the surrounding tropical hills. Visitors are often struck by the monumental scale of the architecture and the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from the Capitol's elevated position.
