Rock Islands Southern Lagoon (Palau)

Weather…

The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon in Palau is a panoramic marine sanctuary and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012. Spanning over 100,000 hectares, it consists of 445 uninhabited limestone islands of volcanic origin, famously shaped like emerald mushrooms due to centuries of wave erosion at the waterline. The lagoon is renowned for its exceptional marine biodiversity, featuring over 350 coral species and more than 1,500 fish species within its expansive reef system. One of its most distinctive features is the presence of 52 marine lakes, including the world-famous Jellyfish Lake, where millions of golden jellyfish have evolved in isolation. Archaeologically, the islands hold deep significance, with remains of ancient stone villages and burial sites providing evidence of early Palauan seafaring cultures dating back over 3,000 years. The combination of turquoise waters, hidden caves, and dense tropical foliage makes the Rock Islands a premier destination for kayaking and diving, offering a rare glimpse into a pristine ecosystem where geological wonders and biological marvels coexist in a protected and serene environment.
