Melekeok is a historically significant village situated on the eastern shore of Babeldaob, the largest island in Palau. It serves as the administrative center of the Melekeok State, within which the national capital, Ngerulmud, is located. Long before the government moved to its modern hilltop complex, Melekeok was the traditional seat of power for some of Palau's most influential clan chiefs, a heritage that remains deeply embedded in the village's social fabric. With a modest population of around 300 residents, the village maintains a peaceful atmosphere directly overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Nature enthusiasts are drawn to the nearby Ngardok Lake, the largest freshwater body in Micronesia, which acts as a vital sanctuary for endemic birds and saltwater crocodiles. Visitors can explore traditional meeting houses (bai) and enjoy the lush coastal scenery, experiencing a unique juxtaposition between ancient Micronesian customs and the modern political ambitions represented by the nearby capitol building, making it a cornerstone of Palauan identity.
