It serves as the administrative center of the Melekeok State, within which the national capital, Ngerulmud, is located. Long before the government moved to its modern hilltop complex, Melekeok was the traditional seat of power for some of Palau's most influential clan chiefs, a heritage that remains deeply embedded in the village's social fabric. With a modest population of around 300 residents, the village maintains a peaceful atmosphere directly overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
