Ngerulmud is the official capital of the Republic of Palau, famously known as the least populous national capital in the world. Located in the state of Melekeok on the island of Babeldaob, it became the seat of government in 2006 after moving from the former capital, Koror. The centerpiece of Ngerulmud is the grand Capitol complex, which features neoclassical architecture reminiscent of the United States Capitol, but integrated with traditional Palauan motifs. This complex houses the National Congress (Olbiil Era Kelulau), the executive offices, and the judiciary. Unlike most world capitals, Ngerulmud is strictly an administrative center without a significant residential population, shops, or urban infrastructure. Most government workers commute from Koror, leaving the capital feeling exceptionally quiet and spacious. The relocation was intended to stimulate development on Babeldaob, the country's largest island, and to decentralize political power. For travelers, Ngerulmud provides a surreal sight: a massive, ornate government building rising from the lush tropical forest, symbolizing the nation's modernization and political identity.
