Sveti Nikole serves as the administrative and economic hub of the Ovče Pole plain in central North Macedonia. The town is located in one of the driest and windiest regions of the country, which has historically dictated local agricultural practices, specifically grain production and sheep farming. First mentioned in the 13th century, the town derives its name from the Church of St. Nicholas. Its strategic position at the intersection of trade routes connecting Veles, Štip, and Kumanovo facilitated its growth as a regional commercial center. In modern times, Sveti Nikole has evolved into a center for food processing and the textile industry. Archaeological sites like Bylazora, located nearby, demonstrate the region's historical significance as a major settlement and former capital of the Paeonian people during antiquity.
