Church of Saint Pantaleon - Veles (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Church of Saint Pantaleon in Veles is a monumental masterpiece of sacred architecture and is considered one of the most significant works by the architect Andreja Damjanov. It was built in 1840 on the site of an older church on the steep western slope above the city. The church is a three-aisled basilica of massive dimensions, renowned for its exceptional acoustics. To achieve this effect, Damjanov had pottery shards and jugs walled into the upper sections of the walls. The interior impresses with a magnificent iconostasis and wall paintings depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Notably, due to Ottoman regulations, the church had to appear more modest on the outside than it is on the inside. For a long time, it served as the cultural and religious center of Veles and housed one of the region's first libraries. Today, it is a protected monument, attracting visitors with its architectural finesse and peaceful mountainside location.
