Stobi is the most significant archaeological site in North Macedonia and was once a flourishing ancient city at the crossroads of major trade routes. It is located at the confluence of the Erigon (Crna Reka) and Axios (Vardar) rivers and served as the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia Secunda. Excavations have unearthed an impressive Roman theater from the 2nd century AD, which could accommodate over 7,000 spectators. In addition to the theater, visitors can see magnificent palaces with elaborate mosaic floors, early Christian basilicas, and ancient thermal baths that testify to the city's wealth. A severe earthquake in 518 AD marked the beginning of Stobi's decline, after which the city was finally abandoned in the 6th century. Today, the expansive grounds offer a fascinating insight into Roman and early Byzantine urban planning and are a major destination for history enthusiasts from around the world.
