Isar-Marvinci (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Isar-Marvinci is a major archaeological site located in the Vardar Valley, near the village of Marvinci close to Valandovo. The settlement has a continuous history of occupation from the 4th century BC until the 6th century AD and is frequently identified with the ancient city of Idomene. Its strategic position on a hill allowed for the control of trade routes connecting the Aegean Sea with the Balkan interior. Excavations have revealed impressive remains, including a monumental forum, temples, thermal baths, and residential quarters. Especially valuable are the finds from the Paeonian, Macedonian, and Roman periods, which provide a deep insight into the daily lives and religious practices of its ancient inhabitants. An extensive nearby necropolis has yielded numerous grave goods, such as ceramics, gold jewelry, and coins, which are currently exhibited in the museums of Valandovo and Skopje. Despite destruction caused by earthquakes and invasions at the end of antiquity, Isar-Marvinci remains one of the most important testaments to urbanization in this part of ancient Macedonia.
