Historic Centre of Agadez (Niger)

Weather…

The historic centre of Agadez, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013, is an outstanding example of earthen architecture in the southern Sahara. Founded in the 15th and 16th centuries as the capital of the Sultanate of Aïr, the city evolved into a major spiritual and cultural hub for Islam in West Africa. The urban landscape is defined by winding alleys and residential houses made of banco (dried mud), clustered around the imposing Grand Mosque. Its 27-meter-high minaret, the tallest earthen tower ever constructed, has served as a landmark for caravans for centuries. The city's social structure is divided into eleven historic quarters, each preserving its own traditions and crafts. Agadez remains the seat of the Sultan of Aïr to this day and serves as a living symbol of Tuareg identity and the cultural fusion between nomadism and urban civilization.
