The Langtang Valley is located north of Kathmandu, near the border with Tibet. It is the heart of Langtang National Park, Nepal's first Himalayan national park. The valley is known for its pristine nature, diverse flora and fauna, including the rare Red Panda, and the rich culture of the Tamang people. The valley's main attraction is the trek that leads through forests, along the Langtang Khola river, and up to high-altitude pastures. The village of Kyanjin Gompa at the end of the valley gives impressive views of the surrounding peaks, such as Langtang Lirung. The 2015 earthquake hit the valley hard, when an avalanche wiped out Langtang village, but the region has since recovered and is open to trekkers again.

Getting there
Trekkers generally begin their journey in the town of Syabrubesi, following the river upstream into the glacial basin.
Best season
March to May and September to November are typically the optimal periods to enjoy the blooming alpine flora and clear skies.
Terrain & paths
The path winds through dense forests before opening up into a U-shaped glacial valley with rocky, exposed segments.
What to bring
Layered clothing suitable for freezing nights and warm days is necessary, along with a reliable water purification system.
Parking
Transport usually terminates at the lower trailheads where long-term parking or drop-offs can be easily arranged.
Safety
Visitors should remain alert for rockfalls, especially after heavy rains, and carefully monitor their bodies for altitude issues.
Time needed
A complete hiking itinerary through this beautiful alpine environment normally spans seven to ten days round trip.
