Dakshinkali Temple (Nepal)

Weather…

Dakshinkali Temple, located about 22 kilometers south of Kathmandu, is one of the most important temples in Nepal dedicated to the fearsome goddess Kali. The name means 'southern Kali'. The temple is notorious for its twice-weekly animal sacrifice rituals, held every Tuesday and Saturday to appease the bloodthirsty goddess. Devotees primarily sacrifice uncastrated male goats and roosters in the hope that their wishes will be fulfilled. The temple complex is situated in a river gorge and consists of a main shrine adorned with a gilded statue of the goddess Kali. The atmosphere is intense and, for many Western visitors, a culture-shocking experience, but it has a deep insight into the tantric traditions of Nepalese Hinduism. The area around the temple is often bustling with pilgrims and vendors offering flowers, incense, and sacrificial animals.
