Nalanda University Ruins (India)

Weather…

The ruins of Nalanda in Bihar mark the site of one of the world's first and most prestigious residential universities. Established in the 5th century CE under the Gupta Empire, Nalanda flourished for over 700 years as a global center of learning, attracting scholars and students from as far away as China, Korea, Japan, and Central Asia. The university provided advanced education in subjects such as astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and philosophy, housing up to 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers at its peak. The architecture comprised monumental brick temples, several monasteries (viharas), and a legendary library named 'Dharmaganja', which was reputed to contain millions of manuscripts. The institution met a violent end in 1193 CE when it was sacked and burned by the forces of Bakhtiyar Khilji. For centuries, the site lay buried until systematic archaeological excavations began in the 19th century. In 2016, Nalanda Mahavihara was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolizing India's ancient intellectual and academic excellence.
