Chandragiri Municipality, located in the southwest of the Kathmandu Valley, is a place of great historical and scenic importance. Its most prominent feature is Chandragiri Hill (2,551 m), from whose summit one can enjoy wide-open panoramic views of the Himalayan range from Annapurna to Everest. Historically, it was from this hill that King Prithvi Narayan Shah first caught sight of the Kathmandu Valley and conceived his plan to unify Nepal. Today, a modern cable car ascends to the summit, where the Bhaleshwar Mahadev Temple, a major pilgrimage site, is located. The municipality itself comprises a mix of urban settlements and extensive forest areas, which are part of the buffer zone of the Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park. Chandragiri is a popular destination for day trips, pilgrimages, and short hikes.
