Guhyeshwari Temple
Guhyeshwari Temple, located on the banks of the Bagmati River near the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, is one of the most important Shakti Pithas in Hinduism. A Shakti Pitha is a sacred place that commemorates the spots where parts of the body of the goddess Sati fell. It is believed that Sati's knees (or according to other traditions, her vagina or anus) fell here. The name 'Guhyeshwari' means 'Secret Goddess'. The temple is a unique example of tantric worship. In the center of the temple, there is no idol, but an opening in the ground filled with water, symbolizing the yoni (female genitalia) of the goddess. Devotees make offerings to the goddess by throwing gifts into this opening. The temple, built in the 17th century by King Pratap Malla, has a pagoda architecture and is an important place for tantric practitioners. Access to the inner courtyard is restricted to Hindus only.
