Changu Narayan Temple, perched on a hilltop about 12 kilometers east of Kathmandu, is recognized as the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal. Its origins date back to the 4th-century Licchavi period, evidenced by a stone inscription from 464 CE, which is the oldest known inscription in the country. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple showcases an extraordinary collection of stone, metal, and wood carvings depicting various incarnations of the deity. The two-tiered pagoda is surrounded by smaller shrines and intricate sculptures, including the famous relief of Vishnu Vikrant. Despite its historical significance, the temple remains off the beaten path, preserving its peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Changu Narayan is not only a religious center but also an architectural gem that documents the transition from ancient to medieval Nepalese art. The 2015 earthquake caused severe damage, but subsequent restoration efforts have successfully preserved its historic grandeur and artistic integrity.

Visiting
Changu Narayan Temple is open to all visitors, you can see the inner courtyard and main temples. Entry is ticketed for foreigners, but the grounds are very well preserved.
Typical hours
The temple is typically open from morning to late afternoon, about 9 am to 5 pm. On holidays hours may differ, check locally.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the grounds, you can also capture the impressive carvings. Inside the temple rooms, photography is usually prohibited.
Time needed
Plan about an hour to explore the temple and surroundings. The hill also features a nice view, for which you should allow an extra 20 minutes.
Combine with
Combine the visit with the nearby Bhaktapur Durbar Square, just 20 minutes by car. The traditional village of Changu itself is also worth a stroll.
Getting there
The temple is on a hill east of Bhaktapur, about 10 kilometers from Kathmandu. You can reach it by taxi or local bus to the foot of the hill, then walk up.
Insider tip
Visit the temple early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Bring binoculars to better see the details of the carvings.
