Madhyapur Thimi is one of four municipalities in the Kathmandu Valley and a historical Newar city with a rich culture and tradition. Its name means 'middle town', reflecting its central location between the three great royal cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. Thimi is famous for its pottery; the city's streets are often lined with earthenware drying in the sun. The city is also known for its colorful festivals, especially the Bisket Jatra (New Year festival) and the tongue-piercing festival. Despite its proximity to the larger cities, Madhyapur Thimi has preserved its own identity and a slower pace of life. The old town, with its temples, courtyards (bahals), and traditional houses, is a living museum of Newar architecture and lifestyle. Agriculture, especially vegetable farming, still plays a role in its outskirts.
