Damaraland Desert Elephants (Namibia)

Weather…

The desert-dwelling elephants of Damaraland are a unique population of African bush elephants adapted to the hyper-arid conditions of the Namib Desert. While not a distinct subspecies, they exhibit morphological differences such as smaller body mass and wider foot pads, which prevent them from sinking into the soft desert sand. They primarily inhabit the ephemeral riverbeds of the Kunene and Erongo regions, traveling distances of up to 70 kilometers a day to reach scarce water sources. Their diet consists of desert-adapted vegetation including acacia pods, grasses, and bark, and they are known to survive for several days without drinking liquid water. The population is closely monitored because they frequently interact with local farming communities, requiring integrated conservation strategies to manage human-wildlife conflicts. Since the late 1990s, their numbers have recovered from significant poaching pressure, making them a cornerstone of Namibia's community-based natural resource management model.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time is the cool dry season from May to September, when the elephants regularly come to the few water sources. During these months the animals are best observed along dry riverbeds.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are the most active times as elephants search for water. During the midday heat the animals usually rest in the shade of large rocks or trees.
📜
Etiquette
Always keep a safe distance of at least 50 metres from the elephants. Remain inside your vehicle and avoid loud noises, as these could stress the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Good binoculars and a camera with telephoto lens are essential for observing the elephants from a safe distance. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the sun in Damaraland is very intense.
🧭
Getting there
Damaraland is reachable by road from Swakopmund or Khorixas, but many areas require 4x4. Guided tours are recommended to find the best spots and ensure safety.
🦌
What to expect
The elephants can cover large distances and are not always near the roads. Finding the herds takes time and patience - plan several hours for the search.
