Swakopmund Lighthouse (Namibia)

Weather…

The Swakopmund Lighthouse is one of the most recognized landmarks on the Namibian coast, having guided ships safely through the treacherous waters of the South Atlantic for over a century. The tower was originally commissioned in 1902 and stood at a height of only 11 meters. To increase the range of its light signal, it was heightened in 1910 to its current total height of 28 meters. The distinctive red and white bands were added later to enhance its visibility as a daymark for seafarers. Located in the center of Swakopmund near the beach and the Swakopmund Museum, the lighthouse remains an active navigational aid, although it is now fully automated. The ground floor of the adjacent building currently houses a restaurant, making it a popular social hub for both locals and tourists. It stands as a powerful symbol of the town's maritime heritage and Swakopmund's historical role as the primary port for the former German South West Africa.
