Uis is a former mining settlement in western Namibia, located in the Erongo Region at the base of the majestic Brandberg Massif. The town was established in 1958 to exploit what was then the world's largest hard-rock tin mine, the closure of which in the 1990s nearly turned Uis into a ghost town. In recent years, Uis has experienced a significant revival driven by both the resumption of limited mining activities and a flourishing tourism sector. Due to its strategic location, the town serves as the primary gateway to the Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain, which is world-renowned for the 'White Lady' rock painting. Geographically, the surrounding area is defined by a stark but colorful desert landscape featuring vast plains and dramatic granite formations. Much of the local population belongs to the Damara people, who are frequently seen selling handcrafted jewelry and semi-precious stones to passing tourists. Today, Uis provides essential services such as fuel stations, supermarkets, and various accommodations for travelers journeying through Damaraland. The arid climate and clear night skies also make the region a popular destination for stargazing.
