Brandberg Mountain (Namibia)

Weather…

Brandberg Mountain is the highest mountain massif in Namibia, located in the Erongo Region in the heart of Damaraland. Its highest peak, Königstein, reaches an elevation of 2,573 meters above sea level and stands as a dominant landmark visible from the vast desert plains for miles. The name 'Brandberg' translates to 'Fire Mountain' in German and Afrikaans, a reference to the glowing orange-red color the granite walls take on during sunset. Geologically, it is a massive granitic intrusion that formed approximately 130 million years ago during the breakup of Gondwana. The mountain is globally renowned for its exceptional wealth of prehistoric rock art, with more than 45,000 individual paintings scattered across hundreds of sites. The most famous is the 'White Lady,' a depiction found in the Tsisab Ravine that was created by the San people at least 2,000 years ago. The massif is also an ecological island, hosting a diverse range of plant species, many of which are endemic to the mountain. Due to its immense cultural and natural significance, the Brandberg was added to the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list in 2002 and is protected as a national monument.
