Woermannhaus (Namibia)

Weather…

The Woermannhaus in Swakopmund is one of the city's most distinctive historical buildings and a prime example of German colonial architecture. It was constructed in 1905 for the Damara & Namaqua Trading Company and originally served as the administrative and residential headquarters for the Woermann Line. The architecture is notable for its timber-framed structure and the iconic 25-meter-high Damara Tower, which once functioned as a lookout point for approaching ships and ox-wagons. After falling into disrepair in the 1960s, the building was extensively restored in 1976 and declared a national monument. Today, the Woermannhaus houses the Swakopmund public library and an art gallery managed by the local arts association. The inner courtyard with its elegant arcades provides a tranquil atmosphere and has insight into the coastal town's colonial past. The tower remains open to visitors, providing spectacular panoramic views over Swakopmund, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding Namib Desert.
