Omaruru is situated along the Omaruru River in the Erongo Region and is widely regarded as an artistic and cultural hub in central-northern Namibia. The town was founded in 1870 by Swedish trader Axel Eriksson as a trading post and later became a significant Rhenish missionary station. It holds a prominent place in local history due to the Herero uprisings, marked by the Franke Tower, which was erected in 1908 to defend the settlement during sieges. Omaruru is famous for its thriving arts scene, with many galleries and craft workshops operating in the area. A unique feature of the town is the Kristall Kellerei, one of Namibia's few wineries, which thrives on the limestone-rich soils and specific microclimate of the valley. Additionally, the town is a center for boutique chocolate and cheese production. Each year, it hosts traditional Herero ceremonies to honor fallen ancestors, making it a living museum of cultural heritage.
