White Lady of Brandberg (Namibia)

Weather…

The White Lady is the most famous rock painting in Namibia, located in the Tsisab Ravine of the Brandberg Massif, the country's highest mountain. The figure, approximately 45 centimeters high, was discovered in 1918 by German topographer Reinhard Maack and gained worldwide fame through the interpretations of archaeologist Henri Breuil. Breuil erroneously suggested a Mediterranean or Egyptian origin, a theory that has since been scientifically debunked. The painting is part of a 5.5-meter-wide frieze and is now attributed to the San Bushmen, who created it about 2,000 years ago. The central figure likely depicts a shaman or hunter in a ritual context and is painted with white pigment, contrasting with the other brown and red figures. To protect the sensitive artwork from vandalism and erosion, access is currently permitted only when accompanied by licensed guides.
