Brandberg Massif (Namibia)

Weather…

The Brandberg Massif is the highest mountain range in Namibia and a prominent geological feature in Damaraland. Its highest peak, Königstein, rises to 2,573 meters, standing far above the surrounding semi-desert. The name 'Brandberg' refers to the glowing red color that the rock takes on at sunset, giving the massif the appearance of a burning mountain. Geologically, the massif consists of a giant granite intrusion body formed about 132 million years ago during the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana. The Brandberg Massif is world-renowned for its extraordinary concentration of prehistoric rock paintings by the San people. The most famous depiction is the 'White Lady,' a drawing discovered in the mid-20th century that remains a subject of scientific debate. The ecological significance of the mountain is also noteworthy, as its elevation creates a microclimate that allows numerous endemic plant and animal species to survive. Climbers and hikers value the massif for its challenging routes and wild, untouched nature. The area is under conservation and is recognized as a national monument of Namibia.

Getting there
This massive mountain is mostly approached from the surrounding desert settlements, often making a reliable 4x4 vehicle absolutely necessary for navigating the final rugged kilometers.
📅
Best season
The noticeably cooler winter months are generally the very best time for hiking, allowing visitors to safely avoid the extreme and potentially dangerous heat of the harsh Namibian summer sun.
