Kom Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Kom Monastery is situated on an isolated island (or a peninsula during low water levels) within Lake Skadar, near the former fortress-town of Žabljak Crnojevića, and stands as an outstanding monument of the Crnojević dynasty. Built between 1415 and 1427 by Đurađ and Aleksa Crnojević, it served in the 15th century as a burial place for members of this ruling family, including Stefan Crnojević. The architectural design is minimalist, featuring a single-nave church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, once enclosed by defensive walls to repel advancing Ottoman forces. A unique highlight is the preservation of mid-15th-century frescoes, which maintain remarkable artistic quality despite the lake’s humidity and centuries of historical upheaval. The monastery was also the site of significant political milestones; in 1831, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš was appointed archimandrite here. Due to its remote location amidst the wetlands and lily pads of Lake Skadar National Park, the site radiates a profound spiritual tranquility. Today, the monastery is a sought-after destination for boat excursions, where visitors can experience both medieval heritage and the lake’s diverse birdlife.
