Lesendro Fortress (Montenegro)

Weather…

Lesendro Fortress is situated on a small island in Lake Skadar and was once the key to defending Montenegrin territory against Ottoman incursions. It was expanded and fortified in 1832 by Petar II Petrović-Njegoš to ensure the safety of navigation and fishing rights. Njegoš frequently spent time on the island, using the solitude for writing and strategic planning. However, in 1843, while Njegoš was away, Ottoman forces launched a surprise attack and captured the fortress. The loss affected Njegoš so deeply that it inspired the local idiom 'Njegoš's regret.' The Ottomans further fortified the island and occupied it until 1878, when Montenegro regained it following the Congress of Berlin. Today, the ruins are easily visible from the main road connecting Podgorica and Bar, as the island is now linked to the mainland by a railway embankment. The massive walls and bastions continue to tell the story of the fierce struggles for lake dominance.
