Beška Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Beška Monastery is situated on an island in the southern part of Lake Skadar and is renowned for its two churches representing different historical periods. The older church, dedicated to St. George, was built in the late 14th century by Đurađ II Stracimirović Balšić and exhibits Serbian-Byzantine architectural influences. The smaller Church of the Holy Mother of God was founded in 1440 by Jelena Balšić, daughter of Prince Lazar, as her burial church. Jelena was a notable historical figure who transformed the monastery into a cultural and spiritual center where many religious texts were authored. The complex suffered significantly during wars with the Ottoman Empire and lay in ruins for centuries. A comprehensive reconstruction in the early 21st century revived the monastic tradition. Today, Beška is an active nunnery and stands as a testament to the deep connection between faith and history in Montenegro.
