Besac Fortress (Montenegro)

Weather…

Besac Fortress sits on a hill above Virpazar, offering a strategic vantage point over Lake Skadar and the fertile Crmnica region. It was constructed by the Ottomans in the late 15th century, likely around 1478, to consolidate their dominance against Montenegrin and Venetian forces. The architecture features massive defensive walls, an imposing tower, and barracks typical of Ottoman military engineering. In 1702, during local uprisings, Montenegrin forces managed to capture the fortress, marking a turning point in regional control. During World War II, the site was utilized by Italian occupying forces as a prison and military base. After suffering severe damage in the 1979 earthquake, Besac was extensively restored in recent years. Today, it stands as a protected cultural monument, serving as a lookout point and cultural venue that preserves the history of this turbulent border region.
