It was originally built to protect the coastline from pirate raids and served as a strategic lookout point for the Republic of Venice in the southern Adriatic. The fortress is perched on a rocky peninsula that overlooks Petrovac's harbor, offering impressive views of the nearby Katič and Sveta Nedelja islets. Roman mosaics discovered nearby suggest that the area has been inhabited since antiquity, long before the Venetian walls were raised. Over the centuries, the fortification has served various roles, including a quarantine station and a military outpost. Today, Kastio is a beloved tourist landmark, featuring a small museum and a terrace bar that is particularly popular at sunset. The well-preserved ramparts and 19th-century cannons provide a historic charm that defines the town's seaside silhouette.

Visiting
Kastio Fortress sits on a rock off Petrovac and can only be viewed from outside. Access to the island is not possible.
Typical hours
As the fortress cannot be entered, there are no opening hours. The best view is from the beach or from boats.

Photography is possible at any time from the shore. Pictures are especially beautiful at sunset when the fortress glows golden.
Time needed
Viewing from outside takes about 10 minutes. For photos and enjoying the view, allow 20 minutes.

Combine the visit with a swim at Petrovac beach. The nearby old town with its alleys is also pleasant.
Getting there
Petrovac beach is the best starting point to see the fortress. It is easily visible from the shore.
