Haj-Nehaj Fortress (Montenegro)

Weather…

Haj-Nehaj Fortress is located on a steep hill 230 meters above sea level near Sutomore and is one of the most intriguing military monuments on the Montenegrin coast. It was built in the 15th century, likely under Venetian administration, to control the strategically vital Bar region. A unique feature of the fortress is the Church of St. Demetrius located within its walls, which once housed two altars, one Orthodox and one Catholic, reflecting the region's religious diversity. In 1571, the fortress fell to the Ottomans, who reinforced the walls and maintained it as a military garrison until 1877. The climb to the ruins is steep and challenging, but the remains of the gates, towers, and defensive walls offer an authentic look at medieval fortification design. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding mountains, underscoring the site's historical defensive importance.
