Gradište Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Gradište Monastery is situated above Buljarica Bay near Petrovac and serves as one of the most significant spiritual centers of the Paštrovići region. According to local tradition, the complex was founded in 1116, though its first written mention appears in a charter issued by Serbian King Milutin in 1305. The monastery complex consists of three churches dedicated to Saint Nicholas, Saint Sava, and the Dormition of the Mother of God. Notably, the iconostasis in the main Church of Saint Nicholas was carved in 1864 by the artist Vasilije Krstov Janković. During the Napoleonic Wars and World War II, the monastery suffered severe damage but was extensively restored in the 1980s following the devastating 1979 earthquake. Today, it remains an active monastery housing important 17th-century historical manuscripts and well-preserved frescoes.
