Dobrilovina Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Dobrilovina Monastery is located in the scenic Tara River valley at the entrance of the Tara Canyon and is widely known as 'Little Morača.' The first written records of the site date back to 1592, while the current Church of St. George was completed in 1609. For centuries, the monastery served as a vital center of resistance against Ottoman rule and a sanctuary for the local population. The church's architecture is modest, yet it houses valuable early 17th-century frescoes created by local masters. Due to its strategic location, the monastery was repeatedly attacked, looted, and destroyed by Ottoman forces, most notably in 1799 and 1833. In the early 20th century, following the region's liberation, the monastery was renovated and its religious functions restored. Today, Dobrilovina is a protected cultural monument, attracting visitors with its spiritual atmosphere and the dramatic natural surroundings of the canyon.
