The Komarnica Canyon in central Montenegro is a geological masterpiece, with its most famous section being the Nevidio Gorge. Nevidio, meaning 'the unseen,' was long considered the last unexplored canyon system in Europe until it was first conquered in 1965 by mountaineers from Nikšić. The gorge is so narrow in some places that one can touch both walls with outstretched arms, while they tower hundreds of meters overhead. The waters of the Komarnica River have carved deep into the limestone rock, creating a sequence of waterfalls, deep pools, and tight passages. Ecological conditions within the canyon are extreme, characterized by limited sunlight and year-round low water temperatures, which favor specialized flora such as mosses and ferns. Geologically, the canyon is a crucial site for understanding the hydrological processes of the Montenegrin karst. Today, traversing the canyon (canyoning) is one of the region's most exclusive adventure sports, though it strictly requires professional guidance due to its technical difficulty.

Getting there
Access to the upper edges of the Komarnica Canyon is via winding mountain roads near Šavnik. Entering the deep canyon itself (Nevidio) requires specialized canyoning equipment and guides.
Best season
Summer, particularly July and August, is the only time when guided canyoning is safely conducted due to lower water levels. In spring, the water is dangerously high and freezing.
Terrain & paths
Viewing from the rim involves walking on uneven, rocky highland paths. Inside the canyon, the terrain is an extreme mix of freezing water pools, slippery boulders, and narrow rock walls.
What to bring
For canyoning, a thick wetsuit, helmet, harness, and specialized footwear are mandatory and usually provided by guides. Rim hikers need sturdy boots and binoculars.
Parking
Parking is typically available near the entrance of the Nevidio Canyon, often near small local restaurants. Arrive early in summer to secure a spot before the guided tours begin.
Safety
Never attempt to navigate the depths of the canyon without a professional local guide. Flash floods are a real danger, and once inside the narrowest sections, there is no easy way out.

A guided canyoning expedition through Nevidio typically lasts between three and five hours. Viewing the canyon from the accessible upper viewpoints takes less than an hour.
